La Storia  / History

Remo’s was born in May 2007 in memory of the late Remo Giuseppe Scribante. His brothers, “Fratelli”, Franco and Renzo Scribante opened their first café in Mount Edgecombe, Durban.

Renzo has had a passion for food and cafes his whole life. He spent time from an early age cooking with his mother in the kitchen and cleaning the tables at Sunday lunches. What started out as a small café with a limited menu has now turned into an established company fuelled by passion.
The Remo’s Originale (Mount Edgecombe Store) is now a bustling restaurant and bar very well known for its quality of food. The addition of our artisan bakery next to the fountain area adds a wonderfully "European" experience - think fresh artisan bread, cakes, croissants, quiches, brownies, imported meats and cheeses, olive oils, pasta and sauces to name a few. Take away treats and sandwiches are collected as an espresso is drunk. It screams Europe in the heart of suburban Durban.

In 2012 Remo’s expanded and the much anticipated Villaggio  store was opened in Umhlanga Village. Whilst this ambitious build was met with hurdles along the way the attention to detail and the final result was well worth it. A charming and exciting venue for an all day, all night hot spot certain to become your local after your first visit. In contrast to the “Originale store” this is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The unique and beautiful bar lends itself to an afternoon drink with friends or a late night aperitif.  Whilst the artisanal bakery and patisserie spills out onto the pavement allowing you to lose yourself in the day to day life of the village. Your slice of Europe is on your Durban doorstep.

Remo’s is a company that is growing formed from a dream and a vision and evolving through hard work and commitment. Every member of the Remo’s team is critical in the success of this business. The passion is evident in the team and the desire for good, wholesome food and service is demanded by our loyal clientele. We are expanding into Johannesburg and possibly Cape Town with an arm of our business focusing on importing products directly from Italy our constant inspirational country.  We are proud of where we started, two brothers remembering a brother and following a dream. We will not forget the original vision but strive to grow and develop this initial spark. It’s all about the Remo’s journey, the people we meet, the time we share and those who will remember us.

We've put together a short video to share our story with you... Enjoy!
